It's heading into the peak time of year for the hiring of apprentices and trainees. Many of the large companies such as utilities and Group Training Organisations have already started advertising and will do so throughout September and October for their January intake of apprentices.
School-leavers who are considering this career path should already be on the lookout for jobs.
While once parents and teachers might have thought that uni was the best option, this is no longer necessarily the case. Now the choice is yours - an apprenticeship or traineeship is just another way of pursuing your career - it's not second best. A career and trade qualification is as prized as a university degree.
There's a skills shortage right around Australia. This means that when you're qualified you'll be in demand - and paid well too. In fact, many employers prefer trained people to those who have just left school, college or university.
Traineeships and apprenticeships are often just the beginning of someone's career journey, and can lead to related studies at TAFE or uni. As a trainee or apprentice, you'll keep your options open while you gain valuable skills, work experience and qualifications. If you later complete a related uni course, these benefits give you the competitive edge when competing for jobs with other graduates.
For example, apprentices with a Certificate IV qualification in Building may later choose to enrol in a uni course such as a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management. Their real-world, practical experience on building sites would give them an excellent understanding of the industry and help them secure interviews with prospective employers.
Apprenticeships and traineeships are 'competency based'. This means it may be possible to complete your training sooner if you have reached the skill level required.
It is even possible to start while still at school. School-based apprenticeships and traineeships allow students, typically years 11 and 12, to study for their Senior Certificate or equivalent, whilst at the same time undertaking government approved and accredited training qualifications as paid employees.
